In class today we completed our song analysis sheet.  Students had an opportunity to share some of their responses.  Tomorrow we are going to the computer lab and the students will select their own song and break it down  (Song break down assignment).  This assignment can be with a partner, if students would like to work in pairs.  Students will follow the guideline sheet.  We will also be doing book exchange.

Today in class we had our poetry terms test.  Following the test we completed a song break down and then we started a song analysis worksheet.  Students were asked to work on, “what emotions did the song make you feel?” and ” what life events does it make you think about?”

Over the last few classes we have been working on Acrostic poetry and breaking down songs using other poetic devices.  We had a fun challenge in class going over poetry terms.  Students have created their own acrostic poem and we reviewed again today for our test tomorrow (Wednesday).

Today in class we read a Robert Frost poem and had a class discussion.  Collaboratively we analyzed each stanza and tried to figure out the meaning.  We continued to work on poetry devices and did a fun partner activity.  Tonight at home students were asked to write a short poem about “Spring or Summer”.

We covered some different styles of poetry and the students created their own interpretations of them.  Tonight students were asked to complete a work sheet (five-sense poem and Imagery) for tomorrow.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on our “poetry unit”. We have been working on “poetry devices”, and  definitions.  Students should be reviewing these each night.

Students should have completed and passed in their A-Z Autobiography.  If anyone has not completed this assignment please pass it in to me on Monday, as we will not be using any more computer time for it.  Students also had the oportunity to go to the library today for a new reading novel.

Students have completed (Step 1) a pre-writing activity for our A-Z  autobiography. ( Step two) They are working on creating 26 sentences (rough copy) from the activity about themselves.  Students should be finished of their sentences and starting to work on their paragraph.  We will be going in to the computer lab to work on our good copies next week!

Please discuss the A-Z Autobiography project with your son or daughter as he/she seems very excited to begin. All outlines and rubrics were sent home with them today.  Students have started (Step 1) a pre-writing activity for our A-Z  autobiography. ( Step two) They are working on creating 26 sentences (rough copy) from the activity about themselves.

Today we had a quest speaker in and we had and lesson on financial literacy.  We discussed such terms as managing finances, savings, mortgage, budget, credit, debt, etc.  We did a class activity and students created their own budget.  Tonight students can review for their book talks.

Today in class we read 3 selections from the Nelson Literacy textbook about technology and had some class discussions.  Students were asked to write a paragraph on an experience that they have had with a piece of technology, i.e cell phone, i-pod, video game, etc.  Tomorrow we may be having a guest speaker in, so books talks may be pushed back til Thursday-Friday.

Today in class we went to the computer lab to work on the Technology assignment.  Students worked with their partner and gathered information and started to shape their assignment.  We will be working on this assignment for the next few classes.

—In a group of 2 you are to show the evolution of a piece of technology (how it has changed)

—You are to create a timeline showing pictures, a description and dates showing how the technology has changed.   You will put your final copy on a piece of bristle board, please be neat, use a ruler, incorporate lots of color and be creative.

—Some technologies that you could possibility do are:

Today in class we had discussion about “Virtual Reality” and read a selection from the Nelson Literacy textbook.  Students were introduced to some new terms today: robosurgeons, simulated, simulator, telemedicine, 3-D, virtual reality.  Tonight, students were asked to write 1 paragraph about something they would like to create with VR and why?  Students will be given the choice to share their responses in the class tomorrow.

We watched a short video regarding the “Metaverse” and how VR is having a great impact on many professions. Next we read  “Under The Virtual Weather”, and answered  some questions on the selection.  Students  were introduced to the following key terms from the text: Debris, Ozone, Disturbing, Satellites, Drenched, Simulation, Forecast  and Torrential.

Today in class we focused on the 4 kinds of sentences: Interogative, Imperative, Assertive, Exclamatory.  We had some discussion, took some notes, gave examples and practiced on our work sheets.  We also started working on “Subject and Predicate”.  Students were asked to complete the 4 questions (subject and predicate) on lesson 2 from the handout, for tomorrows’ class.  We will be working on parts of speech/grammar for the next few classes.

We have continued to work on “persuasive writing” and we have also focused on types of letter format.  Students are currently working on a persuasive letter, it will be due next Wednesday, February 15th.  Today in class we worked on our rough copies and also spent some time preparing for book talks.  Book Talks will begin on Monday, February 13th.  Remember to practice presenting and review your presentation sheet for the requirements.  Don’t forget to bring your book to class on Monday.

Students were continuing to work on their persuasive map, once they have completed their map they will create a persuasive paragraph using their map outline.  1. Topic sentence   2. 3-4 persuasive sentences that support their topic sentence.  3. Conclusion/clincher.  We will be working on persuasive writing for the next few classes.

Today in class students did some group work on their “Remember the Titans” project and then continued to work on their character sketches.  Tonight students should spend some time (20 min) on completing another one.  There are four in total.  Each rough draft should be a page in length.  Students should follow the rubric they were given and the examples that we discussed in class.

We have finished “Remember the Titans” and we are now working on our rough copies, character sketches, and questions for this assignment.  Today everyone created a Christmas card and they made a special greeting for the holidays.  Students are reminded to bring their library books to class tomorrow, as we will have book exchange.

Today we started to watch “Remember the Titans”, students took notes on the 4 main characters and answered questions. Tonight students were asked to look over their notes and add to their character descriptions.  We will be spending the next few classes on this assignment.

Today in class we used Co constructive success criteria to come up with some ideas to create “what makes a sign successful?”  We worked in groups and created different criteria and then began to list our ideas.  Tomorrow we will use the criteria and start our rough copies of our EWS positive sign.

Today the class did an excellent job presenting their “readers theatre”.  Each group presented to the class on their own and then we had the whole group present together.  They did a wonderful job!!  Afterwards we started a reading in the Nelson Literacy text book, “Signs of the Times”.  Students were asked tonight to brain storm some ideas about creating a positive sign for East Wiltshire students.  We will discuss  and share their ideas tomorrow and start working on their rough copies.

Today was book exchange day.  In class students worked in groups preparing for their “Readers Theatre”, which will happen early next week.  We had some discussion on the short story “Resisting Hitler” and students completed a work sheet on the story during class.  Students had the option if they wanted to finish their questions during part of their lunch today. (Tomorrow we will not have a full period of LA due to our Remembrance Day assembly).  If any students have assignment that are not completed, please get them in as soon as possible.

Today in class students worked in groups again preparing for their readers theatre.  We read a story in the Nelson Literacy text book, “Resisting Hitler”and some some discussion on the read.  Students started to work on a remembrance day poster and were asked to finish tonight for homework.

Today in class we had further discussion about the 2 Nelson Literacy pieces: “Universal soldier” and “First they came”.  The class shared their responses to the 3 questions they had to do and then we made text-self, text-text and text-world connections.  The class were introduced to 2 terms: stanza and verse, as they pertain to songs and poetry.

Some students do not have their Halloween stories completed as of yet and must have them completed for tomorrows class.

Today in class we started a unit in the Nelson Literacy textbook related to Remembrance Day.  The class was divided in to groups and they shared their ideas on the theme and had discussions.  We introduced 2 titles of a poem and a song (“Universal Soldier and “First they came”)The class was given 3 questions to answer for tomorrow: 1. What do you think these pieces will be about?  2. What does the word Universal mean? 3. What do you think a Universal Soldier is?

During class today students completed their Literary Elements test. Once the tests were passed in students continued to work on their Halloween stories. During the remainder of the class I was able to mark the tests and give them back to the students.  The tests are to be signed by parents/guardians and passed back in on Monday. Students have the option to rewrite their test on Monday at lunch (should take about 10 minutes to complete).

Students can continue to work on their good copy of their Halloween story and we will finish them up during Mondays class if needed.

Today in class we completed going over our literary terms and definitions.  We will be having a test next Tuesday, Oct. 25.  Students should review the terms to prepare for the test.  We also introduced a story web in class and the students will be creating a Halloween story.  Students did some brain storming in class and some used the story web format to help create their ideas/outlines.

Tonight students can work on a rough copy for their  “The Nest” Assignment.  We will be working on this for the next couple of classes.

Students will choose a scene from the story “The Nest” and draw a rough copy of a picture representing the scene.  You can use images, words and symbols.  Also include a couple of paragraphs to describe your picture.

Today we read a story in the Nelson Literacy textbook, “The Nest”.  We had discussion after we read the selection and the students had to answer a question in paragraph form for homework tonight.  Students also had the opportunity to share their “stepping up” responses out loud to the class.  Redo’s on the “Tubeteika Affair” responses will be excepted until tomorrow (Thursday).  Try to read your novel tonight for 20 minutes.

Today in class I passed back “The Tubeteika Affair” questions, which I marked.  We went through all the questions and responses  together and students were given the option today to redo their responses, if they would like the opportunity to improve their mark (remember to use lots of chicken and potatoes). Responses will be excepted until Thursday of this week. We shared our connections in class and had great discussion.  Tonight students should try to read their novel for 20 minutes.

I passed out an information sheet to the students to share at home about our first unit in the Nelson Literacy text book, “Step Up”.  Students were introduced to the 3 ways to make connections when reading and were asked to write an example for each connection (text-text, text-self and text-world).  Students were also asked to write about a time that they “stepped up” and took a stand.  We will share our responses tomorrow in class.

Today in class we were not able to get computer lab time, so we did some work on audience and purpose and the students read a couple of selections from the Nelson Literacy textbook.  After going through the examples and readings, they started to create their own pieces of work and started to develop a rough copy.  Students can continue working on their floor plans at home and/or work on their new assignment.  They were given a rubric today in class.  Enjoy the last day of May!!  🙂

Today we went to the computer lab and started our Descriptive Language Project (Restaurant Menu and Floor Plan).  Students were shown some examples today and were given a rubric.  Students can continue to work on their projects at home by researching and adding ideas to their menus each night.

Over the next couple of weeks we will be focusing on our “poetry unit”. We have been working on “poetry devices”, and  definitions.  Students should be reviewing these each night.  We read a Robert Frost poem today and had a class discussion.  The class was put in to groups and were given a stanza to discuss and try to figure out what it meant and share with the rest of the class.  We will continue our discussions tomorrow.

Next we read  “Under The Virtual Weather”, and answered  some questions on the selection.  Students  were introduced to the following key terms from the text: Debris, Ozone, Disturbing, Satellites, Drenched, Simulation, Forecast  and Torrential.

Today in class we had discussion about “Virtual Reality” and read a selection from the Nelson Literacy textbook.  Students were introduced to some new terms today: robosurgeons, simulated, simulator, telemedicine, 3-D, virtual reality.  Tonight, students were asked to write 1 paragraph about something they would like to create with VR and why?  Students will be given the choice to share their responses in the class tomorrow.

Today in class we started the next unit in the Nelson Literacy textbook “Technology”.  Students were introduced to the 3 types of self questioning when reading text and we started a group activity on inventions (past and present).  Each group brain stormed their ideas and wrote them down on sticky notes.  From the information gathered collaboratively from the students, they used a large piece of chart paper to show their ideas and selections.  After all the group work was posted on the wall we had the class do a gallery walk to look at all the great inventions over the past number of years.  The class did a great job!!  Tonight, students were asked to write down a few inventions that they were unfamiliar with or that they wanted to know more about.

Today in class we covered “Adjectives” and we worked on the review sheets in class.  If students haven’t completed the review sheets, they should complete them tonight.  We will be having a test tomorrow (Friday) covering Nouns, Verbs, Adverbs and Adjectives. Today one group had finished their assignment and was able to present their group slideshow to the class.  The computer lab wasn’t available today, so other groups will have the opportunity to finish the assignment tomorrow.   During class, students were asked to write about their “Favorite Dream Job” in their journal.  If students didn’t finish it, they were asked to take it home and complete it for tomorrow.

In class today students continued working on their group projects in the computer lab.  Some groups are near completion of their team project and may be ready to present tomorrow.  Students can work on their individual presentations at home tonight, if they feel they are ready and are at that stage in this assignment.

We started working on a group project in the computer lab today.  (slideshow is worked on during class time) The assignment is a slideshow using  key literacy terms and pictures about their novels.  Groups will present their slideshow to the class with each member of the group contributing in the creation  of the slideshow and during the presentation.  Group presentations will start this week.

In class today students were given a group assignment that will be done on the computer about the novel they have read (Creating a slide show).  Students were introduced to a number a literacy terms and wrote them down in their scribbler, which  they will  use during this assignment.  Tonight students were asked to review the terms and their meanings and brain storm some ideas to prepare for their group tomorrow.

We are continuing to work on our literature circles in class.  Students are in groups and are reading the following novels: Sum of Fear, Son of Mob, Holes and Rules.  During class time yesterday the students worked in groups finishing their first part of this assignment in their individual binders.  We will be continuing for the next couple of weeks reading the novels and working on the assignment binder.  If any students would like to take their novel home to read they can.  (The binder work will be done during class time).

Today in class we started a “Literature Circle” group activity.  Each student in the class has a book to read and has a required amount of pages to cover before they have individual group discussions.  Each student will complete 1 page in their booklet during  their group meetings.

Today we went to the library and every student selected a book to read for the upcoming week.  We will be continuing this practice on each day 6, to help increase our literacy time each week.  In class today, I introduced “Persuasive writing” and we had a discussion and went over some examples.  Tonight students are asked to write a persuasive paragraph on a topic of their choice.

Today in class we had some students present their group presentation for their short story project.  All students should have it completed and ready to pass in tomorrow for class.  Students shared some of their connections they made to the CNN news stories and we had discussions about the topics they chose and why.  Next we reviewed the 3 types of connections and discussed how each helped us to be better readers.  I went over the assessment sheet for this reading skill and explained the articles that they will be reading and making connections. We will start the Making connections evaluation tomorrow.

Students did a great job presenting their group “Readers Theatre” today from the song “Universal Soldier”.  Following the presentations students continued to work on their “STEP Up” for East Wiltshire signs and we’re finishing up their good copy of their short story project.  If not completed, students can continue to work on them tonight and finish them in class tomorrow.

Tuesday, Oct. 13

Students received their “Literary Elements” test back today in class.  Students are to bring the test home to be signed by a parent /guardian.  We went over the test together and students made their corrections.  Students have the option to rewrite the test on Thursday at lunch time, if they would like.

Today we introduced the “Short Story Project” assignment.  Students are encouraged to share the assignments at home and come up with some fun, creative ideas.   We started reading our first short story that goes with this assignment, “Alfred the Great”.

Today in class we did a “Read-Aloud” , “In Memory of a Friend”.  We discussed what the components of a Read-Aloud were and had a class discussion on the selection and answered questions.  We had further discussion on the three types of literacy connections and did some examples.  Students were asked to write a paragraph on one type of connection for tomorrow.

Today in class we continued with interview presentations.  I completed a “Read-Aloud” Isms (Monologue) and we had some discussion and answered questions.  I passed out an information sheet to the students to share at home about our first unit in the Nelson Literacy text book, “Step Up”.  Students were introduced to the 3 ways to make connections when reading and were asked to write 2 examples for each connection.

Today in class we did some review on Transitional writing and did some class work on the topic.  Students also created an outline on how to write an official letter.  Students were given a short story in class and were asked to finish questions, if they didn’t complete them during class time.  The questions are to be completed for class tomorrow.  The class was very well behaved today and did a great job!  🙂

Today the class shared their persuasive responses that they did for home work last night.  Following the individual responses we had a group discussion.  Groups were given a new statement that they had to support or reject and persuade the audience with supporting details.  Each group was given the opportunity to share their ideas and opinions. Today in class we continued with persuasive writing.  At the end of class students were given the following example:  “The country is better than the city”.  Students have to create 5 sentences to support this statement.  The students will share their responses with their groups tomorrow and select a final 5 sentences to present to the class.  If anyone didn’t complete their sentences, they can finish them tonight at home.

Today in class I passed back the grammar tests.  We reviewed the test and went over all the answers.  Students were given the opportunity to ask questions and make necessary corrections.  A few students presented their virtual reality responses to the class and we had a group discussion about them.  We read  “Under The Virtual Weather”, and answered  some questions on the selection.  Students  were introduced to the following key terms from the text: Debris, Ozone, Disturbing, Satellites, Drenched, Simulation, Forecast  and Torrential.  Over the weekend enjoy a short story or novel.

Wednesday, March 4

Today in class we read  a section in the textbook about “Virtual Reality”.   We watched a short video regarding the “Metaverse” and how VR is having a great impact on many professions.  Students were introduced to some new terms: robosurgeons, simulated, simulator, telemedicine, 3-D and virtual reality.  We had some class discussion and answered questions together on the reading.  Tonight, students were asked to write 1 paragraph about something they would like to create with virtual reality and why?  Students will be given the choice to share their responses with the class tomorrow.

Monday, March 2

 

Today in class we started the next unit in the Nelson Literacy textbook “Technology”.  Students were introduced to the 3 types of self questioning when reading text and we started a group activity on inventions (past and present).  Each group brain stormed their ideas and wrote them down on sticky notes.  From the information gathered collaboratively from the students, they used a large piece of chart paper to show their ideas and selections.  After all the group work was posted on the wall we had the class do a gallery walk to look at all the great inventions over the past number of years.  The class did a great job!!  Tonight, students were asked to write down a few inventions that they were unfamiliar with or that they wanted to know more about.

We were reading today in class and students are getting close to finishing their individual novels.  If students need more time to read their novel they may take them home this week to finish.  The students will continue to work in their binders on Wednesday.

 

Wednesday, January 14

We are continuing to work on our literature circles in class.  Students are in groups and are reading the following novels: Sum of Fear, Son of Mob, Holes and Rules.  During class time yesterday the students worked in groups finishing their first part of this assignment in their individual binders.  We will be continuing for the next couple of weeks reading the novels and working on the assignment binder.  If any students would like to take their novel home to read they can.  (The binder work will be done during class time).

Today in class we started a “Literature Circle” group activity.  Each student in the class has a book to read and has a required amount of pages to cover before they have individual group discussions.  Each student will complete 1 page in their booklet during  their group meetings.

No Homework!  Have a great weekend!!

Students are to complete their work sheet  on Nouns from class today.

Students are to write 2 paragraphs in their journal response notebook on a current news topic (CNN student news).  Please follow the format given during class today.

Monday, January 5

In class today students were given time to finish up their poster assignment: Stepping Up to make East Wiltshire a Better Place.  If it wasn’t completed in class, please finish it tonight and ready to pass in for tomorrow’s class. ( Make sure your name, class number and date are on the back of the assignment).

Students are working on their “Signs” poster assignment.  Please finish your work sheet and your rough copy at home if you haven’t completed it today in class.  (students were given a rubric for this assignment).

Read for 20 minutes tonight.  Remember our  activity in class today.  Look for signs all around you.   We will have a group discussion in class tomorrow and complete our rough copy for our “Signs Assignment”.

Wednesday, December 10

Students were working on an assignment in class today, “Resisting Hitler” from the Nelson Literacy text book.  If students didn’t complete it during class time today, they can pass it in tomorrow.

Remember to follow outline for “Book Talk” on Friday.

 

Tuesday, December 9

We are continuing to work in the Nelson Literacy text book.

Students should be very close to finishing their novels they have selected for the “Book Talk” starting this Friday, December 12.  Students should be working on the outline sheet they were given to prepare for their individual presentations.

 

Tuesday, December 2

Students were introduced to a song and a poem today in class from the Nelson Literacy text book.  Students worked in groups and we had good discussion about the 2 pieces.  The class started working on a text-text, text-self and text-world connection about the song.  If they didn’t complete their connections in class, they can finish them for homework tonight.

Read your novel for 20 minutes tonight.  (make sure you are making notes and following your outline for the Book Talk on December 12).

Wednesday, Nov. 26

The “Remember the Titans” assignment is due this Friday, Nov. 28.  Students were reminded to take their assignment home with them tonight to work on their good copy. ( Please refer to the handout sheets and the rubric that was given out to the students for this assignment).

Monday, Nov. 24

Students are working on their rough copies of four main characters from “Remember the Titans”.  Each character will be written in their scribbler (half page on each). Due tomorrow (Tuesday).

Thursday, Nov. 20

Students are working on their rough copy for the “Remember the Titans” assignment.  Students were given an outline for the assignment and a rubric on how it will be marked.  Parents/Guardians are encouraged to read over the assignment and discuss it with their son/daughter.  Students received their “Wind Catcher” assignment back today; could parents/guardians please sign it and have them pass it back in on Monday.

Monday, Nov. 17

We have been continuing to work on our theme “Stepping Up”.  The students will be preparing for another writing assignment and watching a video. The students will watch and write a response on how the characters stepped up when they faced a challenge. We will be working on this for the next few classes.

* Reminder for students to finish up their “Rememberance Day” journal responses and pass them in.

* Book Talk presentations will begin on December 12.

Students passed in their “Making Connections” assignment sheet today.  If you didn’t complete it, please pass it in tomorrow during class.  The class went to the library and selected a book for our up coming “Book Talk” in December.  Students received back their A-Z Autobiography today.

We have completed reading the novel the “WINDCATCHER”.   Students are working on and finishing up work sheets on Theme, Setting, Character, and Author’s Craft.  Students can go over their sheets and review them for Wednesday.

 

Monday, Oct. 27

 

Students finished up and passed in their good copy today of the A-Z Autobiography.

Over the next week students will be reading the novel the “WINDCATCHER” during class and focusing on the following areas: Theme, Setting, Character, and Author’s Craft. Work sheets will be given out to the students that support these areas of study.

 

Friday, Oct. 24

In class today students continued to work on their good copies of their paragraphs(step 3), cover page and pictures (step 4).  Students will given time in class on Monday to finish up their  final good copy.

Thursday, Oct. 23

Students are working on their 21 sentences (Good copy A-Z).  If they feel they won’t be finished of their good copy tomorrow during class, they may work on it for homework.  Students that have finished their good copy of their 21 sentences can start their 5 paragraphs.

Wednesday, Oct. 22

Please discuss the A-Z Autobiography project with your son or daughter as he/she seems very excited to begin. All outlines and rubrics were sent home with them on Monday.  Students have started (Step 1) a pre-writing activity for our A-Z  autobiography. ( Step two) They are working on creating 26 sentences (rough copy) from the activity about themselves.

Tuesday, Oct. 7th

Today in class we did a review of  the 4 kinds of sentences and then went in to “Subject” and “Predicate”.  The students worked on definitions and did some work sheet exercises.  Following the work sheet exercise the students completed a quiz on the material.

Reveiw tonight “subject” and “predicate”.

Wednesday, September 24

Students will choose a scene from the story “The Nest” and draw a rough copy of a picture representing the scene.  You can use images, words and symbols.  Also include a couple of paragraphs to describe your picture.  Students are encouraged to read 20 minutes tonight.

 

 

Students should have 3 responses completed in their Response Journal. (About me, Summer experience or Grade 7 experience and make a connection to the “Tubby Takker” story about something you have lost.  “Extra ,Extra, Read all about Me” poster should be completed and passed in.  Students are encouraged to spend a minimum of 20 minutes of reading each night.
